BATEY DE SANCHES – PINAR DEL RIO- CUBA

En el contexto de la serie OTROS TERRITORIOS, los videos y fotografías presentan el resultado del trabajo realizado con la comunidad de BATEY DE SANCHES - región tradicional dedicada a la producción de tabaco en la provincia de Pinar del Rio, Cuba. Las obras son el resultado de una residencia artística vivida en esta comunidad organizada por Proyecto Farmacia como parte de la XIII Bienal de La Habana entre abril y mayo de 2019.
El trabajo investiga este espacio y pequeño pueblo que lleva el nombre del antiguo propietario, el Sr. Batey de Sanches, expulsado del país durante el proceso revolucionario cuando las tierras pasan al poder de el estado luego se dividió entre los campesinos de la región. El tabaco es una de las bases de la economía cubana y la propiedad del estado natural, y no puede comercializarse ni venderse para otros fines. A pesar de la enorme producción, el proceso es muy artesanal, prácticamente de hoja a hoja y requiere un arduo trabajo de los campesinos. Este trabajo fue desarrollado en colaboración con un grupo de personas que siempre han trabajado con tabaco en este territorio y en su mayor parte representan a la última generación viviente que presenció el Triunfo de la Revolución.

In the context of the series OTHER TERRITORIES the videos and photographs present the results of the work carried out in collaboration with the community of BATEY DE SANCHES - traditional region dedicated to tobacco production in the province of Pinar del Rio, Cuba. The works are the result of an artistic residency lived in this community organized by Project Pharmacy, as part of the XIII Havana Biennial between April and May 2019.
The work investigates this space and its complexity in the encounter between memory and present, a small village that takes the name of the old owner, Mr. Batey de Sanches, expelled from the country during the revolutionary process when the lands pass to the power of the state being later divided among the peasants of the region. Tobacco is one of the bases of the Cuban economy and natural state property, and can not be marketed or sold for other purposes.
In spite of the enormous production the process is very handmade, practically leaf-and-leaf and requires a hard work of the peasants. This work was developed in collaboration with a group of people who have always worked with tobacco in this territory and for the most part represent the last living generation who witnessed the Triumph of the Revolution.
