ABOVE ALL, 2021 -2023

Oil paint on military canvas.

Approximately 40 X 50 cm each piece.

ABOVE ALL is a series of 40 oil paintings on military canvas. The reference images for the creation of each painting were captured in various information media and social networks, having as a starting point in historical time, the pro-impeachment movement directed at former president Dilma Rousseff, in 2016, through the governments of presidents Michel Temer and Jair Messias Bolsonaro until the attack on the National Congress by radical supporters of the ousted president on January 8, 2023 as a protest against the victory of the newly elected president Luís Inácio Lula da Silva. It is a mimetic testimony about events in the recent history of Brazil, widely disseminated through media images that act in the formation of imaginaries and narratives, whether historical or present. The rise of right-wing movements, the military presence, political polarization, populist performances, agreements, national or international, denialism and the COVID 19 pandemic or the advance of extremist actions with popular questions about the rule of law are some of the extracts captured in the 40 paintings that are part of this series. The chosen number of 40 final paintings refer to a state of symbolic quarantine that extends beyond the social isolation experienced during the COVID 19 pandemic, with old wounds in present heritages.
